About Stephen Levine

In the mid '70s, while working with Ram Dass and teaching meditation in the California prison system, Stephen met Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. For the next few years he led workshops with her and learned from working with the terminally ill the need for deeper levels of healing and the profound joy of service.

In 1979 he began teaching workshops with his wife, Ondrea. Their books and guided meditations on healing, grief, forgiveness, heavy emotional states, sexual abuse, and other forms of life/death preparation have brought them international recognition.

Several years director of the Hanuman Foundation Dying Project in the USA, Stephen continues his exploration of healing techniques and therapies, leading retreats and acting as consultant to a number of hospice, hospital and meditation groups.

He is the author of 'A Gradual Awakening', the classic book on Vipassana meditation. This has become a standard teaching text (along with Stephen's bestselling title, 'Who Dies?') in countless meditation centres and educational establishments, including medical schools. Other best-selling titles include, 'Healing into Life and Death', 'Guided Meditations: Exploration and Healings' and 'Embracing the Beloved'.

"Stephen Levine deals with meditation and social responsibility in a way that is neither abstract nor hollow. This is practical stuff for day-to-day living. His ability to do this comes from his own life in which he has shown a continuing sense of social consciousness." - Ram Dass

"Stephen's work is magic. His work with the grieving and dying is amongst the most skillful and compassionate that I am aware of." - Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, M.D.
